Gwendolyn "Gwen" Hawke was the eldest daughter of Leandra Hawke (née Amell) and the apostate Malcolm Hawke. She was at the center of the various events that led up to the Mage Rebellion, standing against the Templars, and her name became a rallying cry for oppressed mages during the subsequent war.

Overview

Physical Appearance

Hawke was born albino, reflected in her almost-white hair and very pale complexion. This also manifests as an unusual sensitivity to sunlight exposure and farsightedness.

Hawke wore her hair long and often, though not always loose. She cut it to chin-length in 9:37 Dragon.

Personality

Much to the exasperation of her fellows, Hawke had enough glibness in her to rival a court jester. She regularly earned ire with her flippant, irreverent attitude and apparent inability to take anything seriously. However, beneath this upbeat facade was a cunning, sharp mind and a devious charmer, capable of talking her opponents into believing just about anything. Hawke was well aware of how she was perceived, and was known to use her humorous demeanor to lull opponents into a false sense of security.

By 9:40 Dragon, Hawke felt greatly discouraged, and had much lower self-esteem following her perceived failures to save Kirkwall, stop the Mage-Templar War, and kill Corypheus. It was obvious to everyone that she'd been hit hard by these obstacles, though she continued to plaster a smile on her face for the benefit of others. Still, her demeanor by this point was considerably more jaded and bitter than before.

Talents and Skills

Hawke was a warrior, and a powerful one. She specialized in being a heavy-hitter, preferring two-handed weapons and a fierce fighting style that left little room for enemies to breathe.

Biography

History

Gwendolyn Hawke was the first child of Malcolm and Leandra Hawke, born in 9:06 Dragon near Amaranthine. Her younger siblings - twins Bethany and Carver - were born in 9:11 Dragon. Like Malcolm, Bethany was born a mage. All three Hawke children were watched with careful eyes during their formative years as Malcolm looked for any sign of magic. Only Bethany demonstrated magical potential.

Because of Malcolm's apostate status, the Hawke family moved around frequently. They only settled in Lothering when nine-year-old Bethany's magic emerged. Malcolm died of sickness in 9:27 Dragon, leaving the welfare of the family to his eldest daughter. Gwendolyn quickly assumed her new role as the primary breadwinner for the family, balancing her time between busywork and giving swordfighting lessons to her younger brother, Carver.

In 9:30 Dragon, Hawke and Carver enlisted in King Cailan's army to fight Darkspawn. However, the disastrous outcome of the battle forced them to flee the horde.

In-game

Following the Darkspawn victory at Ostagar in 9:30 Dragon, Hawke and Carver returned to Lothering to protect their mother and sister, Leandra and Bethany.

Shortly after they arrived, Lothering too was overrun by the Darkspawn, forcing the Hawkes to flee. During their escape, the Hawkes encountered a warrior named Aveline, and her Templar husband Wesley. Despite some initial tension between Wesley and Bethany, the group agreed to travel and fight together.

Though they successfully fought through the Horde, Carver was killed by an ogre. Shortly thereafter, Wesley began to show signs of Taint infection, forcing Aveline to kill him.

Post-game

Following the events of Dragon Age II, Hawke and her companions fled Kirkwall out of fear that the Chantry would target the city to hunt her down. She contacted Grey Warden Stroud, requesting an investigation into the red lyrium she'd encountered. However, Stroud was greatly concerned about corruption in the ranks of the Wardens, and went into hiding.

Four years later, Varric contacted Hawke about the reappearance of Corypheus. Hawke traveled to Skyhold and agreed to assist the Inquisition in taking him down, swearing that she'd finish the job by any means necessary. Her reappearance angered Cassandra, who confronted Varric about his deception. Regardless, Hawke's aid and knowledge proved essential in hunting Corypheus down. She led Inquisitor Naelyra Lavellan to Stroud, who explained the predicament - the Grey Wardens were being subjected to a false Calling, and were about to act out in desperation.

Hawke, Stroud, and Lavellan participated in the Inquisition's attack on Adamant Fortress, confronting Lord Erimond and Warden-Commander Clarel over their use of blood magic. Clarel had a change of heart and sacrificed herself to try and bring down Corypheus's dragon. The resulting spell led to the collapse of the bridge they were all standing on, forcing Lavellan to cast the group physically into the Fade.

Once Lavellan regained her memories and discovered that the Grey Wardens had a hand in the death of Divine Justinia V, Hawke was deeply angered. She immediately confronted Stroud about the Wardens' involvement, insisting that the Grey Wardens had to be kept in check. Stroud grew defensive and argued that Hawke had caused more damage by inciting the Mage Rebellion. Lavellan broke up this dispute before it could be carried further.

Despite his defensiveness, Stroud headed Hawke's words. When the time came for someone to stay behind and distract the Nightmare demon blocking their path out of the Fade, Stroud sacrificed himself to atone for the Wardens' mistakes. Though initially eager to stay behind and slay an aspect of Corypheus herself, Hawke acquiesced and escaped with Lavellan.

Following Adamant, Hawke remained with the Inquisition, and played a pivotal role in the defeat of Corypheus. When the Tevinter Magister was finally defeated, she decided to travel to Weisshaupt to personally inform the Wardens of what had transpired. In Varric's words, the situation deteriorated into "the special kind of mess that only happens when Hawke shows up" by 9:44 Dragon.

Hawke returned successfully from her endeavor by that year's end, and offered Bethany the opportunity to cure herself of the Taint.  Following that point, Hawke settled into life in Kirkwall, helping Varric rebuild the city, and enjoying her life as Champion in peace.

For a long time, Bethany was pretty much Hawke's only soft spot.

Carver:

Growing up, Hawke and Carver sometimes had an icy relationship. While they could relate to each other uniquely as the only non-mages in the family (barring their mother), Carver often felt jealous of his sister. He saw her as an overachiever, and felt stuck in her shadow. Hawke, meanwhile, felt rather frustrated at Carver's prickliness. At the end of the day, however, she loved him. And she mourned his death for years to come.

Isabela:

From the very beginning, Isabela intrigued Hawke. A beautiful swashbuckling pirate with a charming sense of humor and an insatiable thirst for adventure? Hawke was drawn right in, and the feeling was quickly reciprocated. Hawke and Isabela began a casual relationship shortly after meeting, though not an exclusive one.

While Isabela continually hid her involvement in the qunari conflict, her feelings for Hawke motivated her to return the Tome that had caused so much difficulty. Though the Arishok demanded that she be returned to him for judgment, Hawke refused, instead challenging him to a duel for Isabela. She won, cementing her own place as Champion of Kirkwall and saving Isabela from further qunari scrutiny.

Following this incident, Isabela spent some time away from Kirkwall. During this time, Isabela and Hawke independently came to the realization that their affection for each other went beyond the physical level. In 9:37 Dragon, they affirmed their feelings for one another, committing to a full relationship. Isabela remained by Hawke's side for as long as possible, until the two were forced to separate in the intervening years between the start of the Mage Rebellion and the Conclave.
