THIS IS WHERE YOUR CHARACTER SUMMARY GOES. BLAH BLAH, BRIEF OVERVIEW

'''Threat Level:''' 7/10. Rian is a talented enough fighter, perhaps not exceptional, but certainly notable. While capable of using a wide variety of weapons, he is most effective with the sword and shield and the mace, and he is distinguished as a warrior by his efficiency and focus on protecting others. Rian is deadly serious about battle, never taking it lightly, and his foremost priority is keeping his companions alive; this shows in his efforts to spare his enemies pain and kill them quickly, and how he is always there to take blows in the place of another. This makes him a very predictable combatant, however, and many enemies have exploited his protective tendencies to best effect. Still, with his determination in battle, skill, and abilities as an illegal templar, Rian is a strong opponent, and experience only makes him formidable.

'''At Risk:''' His codependency, submissiveness, low self-esteem, and belief that he is only valuable for what he can do for others rather than for who he is leave him vulnerable to exploitation and abuse by those who would take advantage of such things. His desire to help people and keep his family safe regardless of the cost leads him to make many dangerous choices that put his welfare at risk, because he has no value for his welfare. His belief that his emotions do not matter and that he exists only for his family leads him to suppress his emotions and cope with his trauma in increasingly unhealthy ways, with regular anxiety attacks being the least of it. This belief also leads him to see himself as a failure when he cannot protect his family, resulting in him becoming suicidal after Leandra's death, and causes him to cling to Anders even when he becomes uneasy with the state of their relationship. A combination of all of this sets him up for a catastrophic mental collapse.

'''Drugs?''' No

'''Violent?''' Only when he needs to be.

'''Addictions?''' Lyrium (DA2) / None (DAI)

'''Self-Destructive?''' Extremely so; his inability to put himself first and constant neglect of his needs in favour of his family, friends, and Anders emotionally drain him dry and leave him wracked with guilt and self-hatred when he cannot protect them. This only worsens as the game goes on, until he ends up staying in an increasingly toxic relationship despite his burgeoning doubts because he cannot bear to lose another person he loves. Ultimately, he does indeed destroy himself.

'''Habit(s):''' Keeping an easygoing, soothing smile on his face at all times, peering closely and carefully examining anything that catches his interest, casting his gaze low and shrinking into himself when threatened or upset, running a hand through his hair and tossing said hair, taking constant deep breaths when working while having an anxiety attack (DA2) / Twiddling his thumbs when anxious or lost in thought, stroking his beard and running his hands over his face, scowling and glaring as a matter of course, going rigid and folding his arms when feeling threatened, strict and unwavering eye contact when in conversation (DAI)

'''Hobbies:''' Coin collecting, helping out in Anders' clinic, helping people in general (DA2) / Drawing, exploring Denerim, reading (DAI)

'''Likes:''' Coins and everything about them, his family, helping people, helping mages escape the Circle, being useful to other people, people acknowledging him as his own person, magic in general, religious art, receiving compliments and praise (especially for anything unrelated to his family), children (DA2) / His new life in Denerim, himself, his job at the mint, the view of the mountain and ocean from the walls of Denerim, being left alone, finally being able to live for himself, abstract art, books about far-away and impossible places and things, plain Fereldan food, coins (DAI)

'''Dislikes:''' Caprice coins, threats to his family, injustice and cruelty of any kinds, himself, selfishness and irresponsibility, the treatment of mages, ignorance, having to always put his needs aside for everyone else's sake (secretly), the worst of the nobility, failing or not being able to help people (DA2) / People, mages, his former friends, the memory of his parents and what they made him into, his sister as a symbol of everything he became, being told he's still Rian, any reminders of his past life, not being left alone, ''The Tale of the Champion'', idealism (DAI)

==Biography==

==='''<span style="color:#c00000;">History</span>'''===

Born on the Summerday of 9:06 Dragon, a few months after his parents arrived in Ferelden, Rian followed exactly the superstitions about Summerday newborns from the beginning. Sweet and quiet, with tufts of blond hair and brilliant blue eyes, he could hardly have been an easier child, even when he was an infant, and his parents adored him without question. But for all his genial nature and how easy it was to raise him, he was still an infant, and his parents were inexperienced, with problems and backgrounds that made child-rearing a challenge. Both Malcolm and Leandra tried their best, but ultimately, Rian would become something of a practice child for them, and what they learnt with him, they would apply far more successfully to Bethany and Carver when they were born four years later.

Growing up, Rian remained as happy and genial as he was as an infant. By nature, he was soft-hearted, with a tendency to giggle and blush and hide his face in his mother's hair when he was happy, and he was rarely to be seen without a smile. His blond tufts had evolved into golden waves, his cheeks were rosy, his eyes were the brightest blue, and his health was near perfect, barring the occasional childhood illness. In terms of personality, he was also quite mature: still fun-loving, but never inclined to rebel or get in trouble, and always willing to help. Because he seemed to have no issues despite his parents' errors with him, they thought of him as the perfect child; Leandra, in particular, saw him as being nothing short of angelic. In their mistaken belief that he was mature enough to handle it, Malcolm and Leandra enlisted him in helping care for his siblings, something Rian was all too happy to do, as he adored them both and wanted nothing more than to spend every waking moment with them.

On the surface, this was fine, but unfortunately, it would ultimately turn into Malcolm and Leandra's greatest mistake. As much as they loved Rian, they both preferred the twins because they had learnt from their mistakes with Rian and knew what to do when it came to raising them. Moreover, both still had their share of issues, both from their backgrounds and from how their marriage had come about, and these bled into how they treated Rian. Rian was expected to grow up faster than a child should, to take care of things that a child shouldn't have had to, even sometimes to get involved in his parents' arguments and tend to their emotional needs. Worse, as the three of them grew accustomed to this dynamic, Malcolm and Leandra began to pay Rian attention and praise only when he did something that helped, such as cooking a good meal or tending to Bethany when she was upset. This was not quite intentional on their part, but it little mattered. As he grew, Rian had no friends outside his family, and because of his responsibilities, he had no time for any hobbies other than going to Chantry services and collecting coins. The latter he had picked up when he was eight years old and found an old coin in the village they'd been living in, and he could never let go of it even as his parents asked more and more of him. But worse was to come.

When Rian was 14, Bethany's magic manifested, and the family subsequently packed up and fled to escape the notice of the templars. Afterwards, the expectations on Rian were weightier than ever. Malcolm would lose no child of his to the Circle, and no longer had much time for his sons due to having to train Bethany, while Leandra lived in constant fear of her family being torn apart. Rian was asked to step up, and step up he did, to an unhealthy degree. He eased Leandra's fears, tended to Malcolm when he was exhausted, did his best to assuage Bethany's worries about her magic and guilt over the family's situation, tried to help an increasingly surly and neglected Carver, kept a constant eye out for the templars, cooked meals, worked on the family's farm, made sure the house was kept in good order, washed clothes, learnt how to wield several weapons so as to better protect Bethany—in short, did everything save look after himself. The gravity of Bethany's situation, and their parents' overriding focus on her and tendency to praise him only when he helped out, ultimately left Rian convinced that he was only valuable for what he could do for other people and that nobody else mattered quite as much as Bethany. This severely damaged his relationship with Carver, who wanted Rian to learn to love himself for himself, but the worst damage it did was arguably to his mental state. Not that Rian noticed.

In 9:27 Dragon, Malcolm died following a long illness. In the aftermath, Leandra fell into a crippling depression that left her unable to assume the role of head of the family, and so Rian stepped up in her place. In many ways, he continued to do what he had done before, but now, he also worked himself to the bone trying to ease both Leandra's pain and that of the twins. He especially focused on Leandra, her depression being what it was, and spent many long days just helping her with basic tasks and letting her pour out her grief to him. He never asked for anything in return, not even to be heard, and when Bethany and Carver tried to ask how he was doing, he would brush them off. As far as Rian was concerned, his grief was secondary to everyone else's, and he believed Malcolm would have wanted to him to prioritise the others over himself. The twins never could convince him otherwise, and as a result, Rian never properly dealt with or processed his grief for Malcolm. As time passed, he thought he had moved past it, but in truth, it remained, an open wound lurking beneath the surface, another blow to his mental health whose consequences had yet to show themselves. It would take something truly cataclysmic for the long years of neglect and parentification to take their toll—and one day, the cataclysm came. It was only the first of many.

=='''Quotes'''==

* ''(to Bethany after Birthright)'' "No, don’t think like that. We made our choices willingly, and I can’t speak for the others, but I lost nothing in protecting you. The templars would see you as an abomination in waiting, and not care about the sweet girl you are. You deserve better than that, and nothing could make me prouder than giving it to you."

==='''<span style="color:#c00000;">Dialogue</span>'''===

''(on the docks of Kirkwall)''

* Wright: You want in, talk to Captain Ewald. I’m just here to keep you refuse from climbing the walls.

* Rian: I appreciate your aid. I also hope that if ever you find yourself in need of some compassion, that you aren’t shamefully denied it and treated as mere ‘refuse’.

───────

''(after Birthright)''

* Bethany: I wish I could do more for Mother. Carver’s death… it’s killing her slowly, every day. But maybe if we can reclaim some of what she lost, it will help. I’d do anything to get us back a normal life.

* Rian: ''[sighing]'' I wish I could do more as well. It’s my job to protect her and you. I already failed with Carver, and every time she… like when you said she wished she’d died with Carver… I have to do more. I will.

* Bethany: Don’t run yourself into the ground, Rian. You’re doing everything you can. As much as we help her, she has to come out of this on her own.
