Johannotus "Johann" Hawke is Leandra and Malcolm Hawke's eldest child along with his twin brother, Nikolaus. He had fought in the battle of Ostagar and had received a leg injury that never healed properly due to giving all his attention to Carver while delaying his own treatment. Motivated solely by his promise to his twin brother to watch over their family for him, Johannotus fulfils his promise to Nikolaus while also protecting the city he now called home, thus earning himself the title of "Champion of Kirkwall". A title he decides to use to his advantage to protect those that mattered most to him.

Johannotus is a tall, well-built man standing at around 6'3". In the prologue, he has long dark brown shoulder length hair that is kept back from his face by tying some of it in a bun to keep it together. He rarely shaves and usually settles for trimming his beard to give a neat but rugged appearance and often puts warpaint on his face both as an aesthetic choice and to make himself look intimidating in battle.

Known to be a civil man, Johannotus gives people the basic respect they deserve upon meeting them but is more than willing to be disrespectful if disrespected as well.

Johannotus was born in a small village near Amaranthine alongside his twin brother, Nikolaus. His father, Malcolm Hawke, was an apostate mage who died three years before the Fifth Blight reached Lothering due to an illness, while his mother Leandra Amell is a former noble from Kirkwall that had chosen to elope with his father. Johannotus has three siblings - Nikolaus Hawke, a mage taken away to Kinloch Hold, Bethany Hawke, an apostate mage and Carver Hawke, a warrior.
Johannotus and his family had a relatively peaceful life running a farm in Amaranthine with Johannotus and Nikolaus taking charge whenever their parents were away. This routine went on for awhile until the day Bethany's magic manifested. When Johannotus found his brother summoning a fireball to distract the crowd while shoving Bethany away, Johannotus tried to get his brother to run with them but instead told Johannotus to run and take Bethany. Johannotus did but he also went home with the hope of getting one of their parents to find a way to take Nikolaus with them. Instead, he had to watch as Leandra burst into tears about how Bethany was almost taken and deal with Malcolm praising his brother's "sacrifice". Due to this, Johannotus felt himself snap and he began running back trying to find his brother only for Malcolm to stop him and tell him they must flee. Against his wishes, the Hawke family moved to Lothering and a new routine was started by him, all of which involved burying himself in housework and business matters to ensure he avoided his family.
At sixteen, he found a contact within the Circle of Magi in Kinloch Hold that was willing to aid him in helping Nikolaus escape and for one year, he planned out his brother's escape from Kinloch Hold. He began taking on odd jobs around Lothering and further towns to earn money and to begin setting aside preserved foods for his brother's journey. At seventeen, he managed to help Nikolaus escape Kinloch Hold while meeting their maternal cousin, Tereysa Amell, in the process. After greeting and thanking her, Johannotus took Nikolaus to the ship meant to take Nikolaus as far as the Free Marches and bid him farewell a final time. Before leaving, Nikolaus proceeded to give Johannotus his book compiling all medicines, illnesses, poisons and antidotes that Nikolaus had filled out through the years and bade him use it for their family. Giving all his earnings and the accumulated food he had bough, Johannotus then watched as his brother sailed far away, mourning his twin once more.

Johannotus' relationship with his mother is complicated if one were to put it lightly. He was fond of her as a child but the moment Nikolaus was taken away and when Leandra began speaking of her children as if Nikolaus was not part of the family, never even mentioning him to even their uncle in letters, Johannotus grew to resent her. This resentment and anger only continued to grow when he asked about visiting or even sending a letter to the Circle of Magi asking after his twin with Leandra's only response to him was to avoid doing so for Bethany's sake. As he grew older, he learned to keep many secrets from her along with keeping an emotional distance between him and Leandra which Leandra only began noticing after he took over the farm and she thanked him after neglecting to watch over it after Malcolm's passing and Johannotus' reply was how he had come to expect such from her. This rift only grew further when Carver died and after that, there was no longer a way to repair her relationship with Johannotus who began treating her with a formal, distant respect than with the fondness she believed he had as a child. Leandra later tries to celebrate Johannotus' birthday with a party but when he found out about the plan, he fled to the Hanged Man and drank himself to a stupor when he realised his mother was still choosing to ignore his twin brother's existence.
Nikolaus "Niko" Hawke[]
Johannotus and Nikolaus share a strong bond with each other. The two would often be left in charge of the house and farm whenever Maclolm and Leandra were away and the two would always work together to fulfil their duties. Johannotus was always practical, choosing the options that would be something he could do or the harsher options he knew Nikolaus wouldn't want to do. Nikolaus is the softer half, the one that lets Johannotus break down and complain about anything he was frustrated about and Johannotus was the firmer half, the pillar to Nikolaus when his twin brother is feeling alone and ignored by both their parents. The two seek each other out constantly that when Nikolaus was taken away when Johannotus and Nikolaus were twelve, Johannotus allowed his anger and blame to fester within himself as Nikolaus had used his magic to deflect attention away from Bethany to him in order to protect their younger sister. At seventeen years old, Johannotus proceeded to plan an escape for his twin brother with the help of their maternal cousin, Tereysa Amell and after a final goodbye between both brothers and a promise to be careful from Nikolaus, Johannotus let his brother go and mourned how he would never see his twin brother again.
Carver Hawke[]
Prior to the Battle of Ostagar, Carver and Johannotus had a civil relationship. Carver would do his chores, Johannotus would thank him, send him on his way and mind their own businesse. This is partially because Johannotus buried himself in work after Malcolm had died and Leandra allowed the farm to deteriorate and partially because the two brothers didn't find much to talk about. Despite their silence, Carver is Johannotus' favourite younger sibling as Carver had never tried to regain his favour through sweet words and bribing acts but just allowed him to mourn and be angry. Carver was also the one that had forcibly pulled him out of his aversion to doing any activity he and Nikolaus used to do by sparring with him every few hours of the day. After the Battle of Ostagar, Johannotus thanked Carver for all his younger brother had done for him and he and Carver spoke to one another as Johannotus continued to carry Carver on his back until they reached home. When Carver died, Johannotus grieved for his brother and had internally agreed with Leandra that it was his fault his brother had died. Johannotus never forgave himself for what he considered his failing and had later named one of his children after his fallen brother.

Johannotus' relationship with Bethany had always one of civil politeness as a child. He neither hated her nor loved her, he simply watched over her and cared for her in a way a brother or a guardian should whenever he was told.
