Lanaya was born (14 Cloudreach 9:16 Dragon) the third child with two older brothers.

Lanaya was always inquisitive. She loved discovery and exploration, and as a young child would wander from camp to pick flowers or discover herbs. As she grew, this passion for learning also translated to valuable skills such as sewing, knitting, hunting, cooking and baking. She loved to learn new recipes and new ways to express herself within the confines of the practical nomadic dalish lifestyle. It became the later reason for her chosen vallaslin, sylaise. Goddess of the hearth, she aspired to use her knowledge and talents to make life better and ultimately more comfortable for her clan.

This selfless attitude is what led her to the conclave. She was eager to know the result as it would possibly impact her oldest brother, who was the keeper's second, as well as her own curiosity of the outside world. So when Keeper Deshanna asked for someone to spy on the peace talk, she quickly volunteered, much to the reluctance of her siblings. Arriving at the conclave at the Temple of Sacred Ashes, she was mesmerized by the size and different people she saw, and her curiosity eventually led her to a room she was not supposed to be in, but in the right place to hear divine Justina call for help. The end result was her being the lone survivor of the conclave who walked out of the fade. A whirlwind of political upheaval and possible apocalypse saw her, a dalish elf, becoming the herald of Andraste and later, the inquisitor. She united mages and templars, became rival to a would-be magister god Coryphyeus.

Two years after the defeat of Corypheus, the inquisition fate was now laid in Lanaya's hands. Orlais and Fredelden feared the inquisition's unchecked power, and it was thanks to Divine Cassandra that the exalted council was called to help find a solution for these growing concerns. Here Lanaya and the inquisition discovered a Qunari invasion as well as the true identity of their former ally, Solas. Lanya learns of her former friend and lovers plan to tear down the veil and destroy this world, and resolves herself to change his heart. She loses her hand and the mark, and concludes the council by declaring the inquisition dissolved. She would change the dread wolf's heart and do so with her tight knit group of trusted companions and allies.

Overview[]

Physical Description[]

Screenshot (70)

Lanaya appears as a very typical elf. Willowy, slender and slightly shorter than the average elf standing at 5'3. To her frustration though, this makes her the one of shortest among her companions, only taller than her dwarven friends. Her skin is tanned from constant travel, hunting under the sun, with a smattering of freckles across her nose and checks. Her red hair is typically separated into two loose braids that fall a couple inches past her shoulders. Her eyes used to be a deep brown, but since the explosion at the conclave, they have changed to bright green, with only a hint of their previous brown. Her sylaise vallaslin covered her face in burgundy, till it was later removed by Solas. She wore no make during the time with the Dalsih, but now wears some light eyeshadow and liner, enjoying an art that was for aesthetics only, unlike all her other previous skills.

Personality[]

Lanaya is an introvert at heart, and becoming a religious figure for a god she doesn't believe is the last thing she would ever want. Becoming a public figure has put a lot of pressure on her. If she could, she honestly probably would have run away and let the world sort out how to save itself. It just isn't in her though to not help those in need. but when the pressures become too much she often turns to solitary pastimes, often baking, as a way to escape. It was a rare practice with her clan, but within the inquisition supplies for such things were more than plenty.

She has a sarcastic silly side, being the youngest child of three and with a protective clan due to the circumstances of her birth, she grew up with a bit more leeway in how snarky and rebellious she could be. This side is more often expressed among those she is familiar with, when in public and in judgement, she is careful and thoughtful, speaking clearly and passionately. In private, she is an active listener, soothing worries and distracting from faraway problems with humor.

She loves learning and caring for her loved ones but likes to do so in subtle less public ways. Knitting blankets, sliding a bag of cookies under the door and gifting leaves flowers on people's desks is how she expresses her kindness and is another coping mechanism to the challenges of defeating magister gods and dealing with political intrigue.

This caring nature combined with inquisitiveness and sarcasm can also make her look sometimes noisy, and other times insensitive to others. She is passionate about equality for all, and has trouble understanding of the games, often seeing the solutions too complicated or contrived for simple problems. If you are hungry you should be able to hunt, if you don't like someone, don't work with them, if you see a hole in the sky, fix it and worry later about who is going to rule the country. She also has developed some self-esteem issues since becoming herald of Andraste, never having to really deal with all the comments questioning her choices and calling her 'knife ear' behind her back. She never had to deal with this level of criticism and while she is more than willing to fight for her friends, she often finds herself silent and unsure how to approach these run-ins with prejeduce against herself.

Talents and Skills[]

Lanaya has an assortment of skills she has picked up throughout her life. Hunting is the most overt skill she has followed by her cooking skill. She has a passion for crafts and loves learning new things to help her clan. Later in the inquisition she had developed a new interest in skills that held limited practical uses but were merely aesthetic or indulgent practices. Baking sweets often fell into this new skill and joy of hers. Her talent in cooking and baking also translated into alchemical talent, using the knowledge of chemistry to create elemental elixirs to help her in battle.

To Josphenine's surprise and joy, Lanaya discovered she had a knack for learning language, and quickly gained a conversational level understanding of Orlaisian. She also had a couple of elvhen lessons with Solas, and even picked up Qun and tevene from Iron Bull and Dorian.

Biography[]

History[]

Lanaya's father is Garahel, named after the heroic Grey warden, was a former city elf who fell in love with her mother Ashalle. Ashalle was a dalish hunter and trader, often contact with towns and cities and as a result meet Garahel. The two fell in love. Garahel left his life behind to join clan Lavellan. The couple soon had a boy. Theneras was born healthy. He early on showed a talent for magic and was soon picked as the second. His birth was soon followed by another boy, Assan'ris. He luckily showed no talent for magic but was great with a sword or bow. It was Ashalle's third pregnancy that caused concerns she went into labor a month too soon and the baby girl was so small the keeper and clan were in agreement that her chances for survival were low. It was only elderly Hanin, who had experience with dealing with premature hallas, was convinced she could survive.

He diligently drop-feed her milk and strained oats. Slowly, she began to gain weight. Till one day she managed to walk, picked a flower, and offered it to her caretaker. It was then that her mother finally named her, no longer afraid that she might lose her only daughter. She was named Lanaya. “She who has given everything” in reference to her developing kind and sharing personality.

Lanaya's childhood afterwards and later adolescence was rather happy. She enjoyed being the youngest and the indulgent nature her clan had to her partly due her precarious birth and later to her energetic curiosity and kind nature. She had her rebellious moments, often against her parents and older brothers protective natures, but ultimately settled into her role as fellow hunter with her brother Assan, and learned history and magic theory from Theneras. She would explore elvish ruins with Assan'ris attempt to decode them with Theneras. It was only when she turned ten did tragedy strike. Sickness swept through the clan, taking the lives of both her mother and Hanin. The grief overwhelmed her father, and he would become randomly inconsolable. Her brothers responded differently, Theneras shutting down his emotions and dove headfirst into his studies as second. Assan'ris became angry, often taking it out vocally either on his brother's seemingly uncaring attitude or leaving to hunt all day, only to bring back enough meat for a week and bloodied arrows. Lanaya continued her life as much as she could, but for two years she was mute. Caring silently for her splintering family and clan. It was then she discovered a talent for cooking and baking, and was encouraged when in the rare moments it would bring her brothers and father together. Eventually they found a sense of normalcy but the pain of losing clanmates remained as a scar.

The fifth blight hit when she was fourteen. The darkspawn made travel and safety difficult and caused the clan to take shelter outside of Wycome. It was then that she experienced her first encounter with humans, and the reality of city elves' treatment. She witnessed a man call her a knife ear and Assan'ris' response of a punch to the face. As satisfying as it was, it only served to make their relations with the city even more tense. Even though she was the insulted party, they were both forced to apologize to the shem, much to her and her brother's humiliation. Thendras also lectured them long and hard about their reckless behavior. Lanaya became determine to fight hatred with kindness then, though she thinks Assan'ris grew even more hateful towards human then. As she grew up she watched as he would sneak out or take longer hunting trips alone, when he would return they would hear news of a noble mysteriously dying or an alienage gaining a surprising amount of money or a marquis missing his favorite elvhen relic. She doubts their father ever notice this behavior, and Thenderas never approach him about it. Lanaya followed suit, only caring for any wounds he return with.

Another result of the stay at Wycome was the resulting further isolation on her end from the rest of the world. Keeper Deshanna and Thenderas kept appropriate contact, and they continued to trade and communicate with humans, but she was limited in her contact with them due to her protective nature of her Keeper and brothers. Even after she turned eighteen and received her vallaslin, her skills as a hunter and provider were acknowledged, but she found her freedom to explore limited to ruins and nature. It was this growing sense of being constrained that eventually led to her stubbornness on being the one to get to the conclave. Both Keeper Deshanna and Theneras admitted that someone needed to go to spy in the conclave, but both couldn't go due to a previous attack by templars that left Keeper Deshanna and three other injured and Theneras the only capable healer, plus Assan'ris was out on a week long 'hunting trip' . Lanaya quickly jumped in, volunteering and insisting she was the only person who could go, her father too old to travel alone, plus no one else had her skills with a bow or stealth, tied only with Assan'ris who was not there. After two days of constant questioning and prodding by Lanaya and no early return of her brother, they acquiesced. It was a choice destined to change her fate, but not in a way Lanaya ever imagined. She was twenty-six.

In-game[]

The events at the conclave threw Lanaya into a very foreign world and role. She had no memory of the explosion, only of the fade and the lack of recollection terrified her as much as the new hole in the sky and the foreign magic in her hand. She knew she had to help though, even if these people hated her, she maintained her belief to return it with kindness. She marched to the breach with a seeker who seemed inclined to kill her then fight with her, meet a dwarf with more chest hair then beard and another elf who looked at her like a curiosity. She marched up the mountain, saved soldiers and sealed the breach temporarily and passed out again.

Waking to find that instead of being hated she was now being called the herald to a god she did not know the first thing of. She discovered she was now a leader in an hertical organization and everything seemed to be constantly falling apart around her. Desperate for help and reluctant to ask templars for help due to previous skirmishers, she went to Redcliffe searching for the mages help. There she found even more of a disaster and weirdness that now stalked her life. She met a magister, somehow was sent a year into the future and discovered that somehow, this mess could get worse. Thanks to a snarky tevinter mage, she was able to return to her time. She captured Alexius and allied herself with the free mages, having no wishes to become like Tevinter and enslave or conscript them. Together with them they were able to successfully close the breach and for a moment it seemed like she could breath without the world trying to fall apart on her when Haven was attacked.

She never felt more desperate, pulling survivors from fires, searching for an escape and resigned to being the distraction to let them flee. She was drowning in guilt as she watched templars march, knowing that if she had chosen differently they could have been saved, if she had chosen differently. It was during the battle at haven she came to recognize truly how much her choices were going to impact thedas and history. So, she approached the elder one with the sarcasm and humor she was growing to show in face of an adversary. She launched the trebuchet and closed her eyes. For a third time she woke in an unfamiliar place, injured and running on pure adrenaline and fear, she fought demons and climbed the freshly snowed mountain. The howling of wolves never sounded more hopeful and more worrisome. It was only when she saw lights and a figure did her body seem to realize it should not be moving anymore. Passing out, she again found herself raised higher, surviving even she had to admit, unluckily odds. It was Solas that helped her scout and together they led the inquisition to Skyhold, where she gained a title she never wanted. The inquisitor, and the very real fate of the world was now in her hands. She pledged to help those in need and that she wouldn't forget her origins no matter how much they raised her as a messenger of a foreign god.

Traveling to adamant and discovering the growing corruption among the Grey wardens made her frustrated. She wanted to scream at where all logic had gone and the disregard for life and freedom. She was deadly in battle, fighting to save as many as she could remembering all those that had sacrificed themselves for her at Haven. It was with this thought that she managed to tear open the veil and fell in with her friends. As much as the experience appealed to her curiosity, the overwhelming sense of fear dampered it. Again she found herself forced to make an impossible choice between Warden Stroud and Hawke the Champion of Kirkwall. Closing her eyes she muttered the name of the man she was sentencing to death, Stroud only nodded to her with acceptance and a smile before they fled leaving him behind. As much as she knew Stroud was an honorable man she couldn't make Varric lose his closest friend. She chose to allow the wardens to stay, not feeling it was right to condemn a whole organization for the actions of its leaders. She threw herself into baking in her free time, finding the process long but simple and rewarding. She also discovered it was very therapeutic for her companions who also suffering from their close encounters.

Lanaya then found herself in a waking nightmare, Halamshiral, the winter palace. Never one for subtlety or pointless small talk, she found herself confused and entangled in politics she was barely following. Somehow managed to gather blackmail for Gaspard, Celene and Briala, finally convincing everyone that maybe the darkspawn claiming to be a god was a bigger problem right now.

Her forces quickly gathered intelligence that Corypheus was seeking entrance into an ancient temple of Mythal in search of power. Lanaya arrived at the temple, fascinated by the history and with much respect completed the rituals. Even though she was looked down upon , this time from ancient elves instead of humans she followed her mantra and extended kindness to them. The well of sorrows, knowledge of centuries of elvhen calling to her, but despite her inquisitive nature she always knew where to stop and leave alone from her other adventures and Solas' warnings echoed in her mind. She valued her freedom and eventually it was reluctantly agreed that Morrgain was the one allowed to take the well.

Finally after two years of political maneuvers, expeditions and battles, Lanaya was met with Corypheus on the battlefield. The fade trickled through, land floated and her companions fought united together. Ultimately winning the battle, but to both her and Solas' disappointment lost the elvhen foci. Despite celebrations, Lanaya found her bittersweet, missing her family and now a disappeared Solas.

In the two years that followed, Lanaya found the world did not stop . She was kept busy by the inqusition and the mess that was still left from the breach. She also finally reconnected with her brother since the conclave, as he could now safely travel without leaving their vunerable. The reunion was tearful and joyful, relief at seeing a familar face and reminder of the life she once had. He sat and listen to her stories, retelling the explosion, battles, and knowledge that Solas had reveled to her. Her took it in stride as much as he could, and while disagreed with some of her new views, couldn't bring himself to reject his little sister. She would alwyas have a place with clan Lavellan if she wanted it, regardless of Vallaslin or none. Lanaya and Theneras also turned their attention to their missing brother, Assan'ris now discovering that he had not only stop contcting her, but also cut contact with clan Lavellan.

Post-game[]

Relationship[]

Lanaya always managed to make unique friends, and nothing showcased it better than the close allies she held in the inquisition.

Cassandra Pentagast[]

"They will stand in the fire and complain that it is hot."

Both had terrible first-impressions of each other. Cassandra believed her to have mass murder the conclave meeting including the Divine, while Lanaya saw the Seeker as another blind human follower, disgusing her racism against elves with her religion. It was only after her venture to close the breach that she started to see Cassandra in a different light. Subsequent conversations made them both realize how much they wanted to help people and how lost they felt in these mess. As time went on, they bonded over mutual interests, Cassandra became an older sister, showing Lanaya makeup and secretly giggling over raunchy books that Lanaya became a fan of as well. They have since started having a 'girls' night' which has slowly expanded to include more of their companions such as Josphinne, Vivienne and occasionally Lelianna. When they discovered the realties of the corruption both the templars and seekers organzations had, both agreed that change is in order. Chantry needed to change and a new divine was in order. Divine, Lanaya voiced these thought with confindence that Cassandra would be a great choice. Cassandra was an idealist and more then willing to act on those ideals openly and honsestly. In a world that seemed so focused on complaning about problems then solving them, Cassandra in Lanaya's eyes was the perfect choice for a change and new possiblites.

Varric Tethras[]

"Heroes are everywhere. I've seen that. But a hole in the sky? That's beyond heroes. We're going to need a miracle."

The dwarf and her immediately hit it off well, sharing in the absurdity of the situation and dealing with it with humor. She enjoyed listening to Varric tales as a reminder of her home and how her own brother used to tell tales when she and her brother were young to impress them and the Keeper would interrupt to correct him on a wrong fact. She also learned how to play games with him, and while she sucked at wicked grace, delighted in the chaos and embarrassment it caused. Her red hair and displeasure at being one of the shortest among their companions earned her the name 'Little Red' much to the humor of the shorter dwarf.

Solas[]

"I felt the whole world change."

Solas was the only elf that was around when it seemed the entire world was set on killing her and her clan was very far away. After she was raised to Herald, he was the only one that wasn't human and didn't seem swept up in religious worship. Plus she discovered, indulged her curosity, answering questions she had of magic and history that she could only dream of being answered. She never intended for her relationship to turn flirtatious, but she loved throwing him for a loop and was becoming intrigued by the mystery he presented himself. He wasn't dalish and he wasn't a city elf. He was something new in a world that seemed intent on putting people in boxes. Eventually their flirtations culminated in the fade kiss. And a whole new level of confusion and hope about their relationship. It became a push and pull, where she would take three steps forward and he three steps back.

His disapparence hit her hard. He was a friend before he became her love and now there was a empty space in the rotunda. When he finally reappeared after two years her joy was cut short but her growing and unsettling discovery about who she fell for. By the time she finally caught up to him, the reality of it still hadn't sunken in. She had fallen for the dread wolf, Fen'harel , the trickster and betrayer of the elvhen gods and didn't know if she should laugh, cry, yell or kiss him. Discovering his true plan for the world however, had her pulling up short. She refused to believe he was beyond saving nor was this world, committing to change the dread wolf's heart.

Warden Blackwall[]

Lanaya's kindness and love for craftwork made Blackwall an easy ally and eventually easy craft companion. She enjoyed his quiet nature and found that when she wanted to be alone, she could always be alone with him. Both were content to work on their own projects and share a space. She never held a talent for woodwork, but enjoyed mastering some of the basics from him,. Most of the time though was spent with her using the workshop to weave blankets while he made stools or a toy horse. When Blackwall went missing, leaving a letter basically saying don't find me , she called bullshit. Her and Leliana were quick to discover the reality of the situation. Lanaya understood why Thom Rainer ran away, understood the signicance a name could mean. But if he wanted to make up for his sins, she would not let her friend hang. She througly believed he could do good in the world still, and used diplomatic connections to conscript him back into the inqusition. She gave him the kick he needed and pardon him, allowing him to stay and even offered him the option to join the wardens after the battle with Corypheus was over.

Sera[]

Watch out, yeah? The hole in the sky didn't start their war. Stupid people did that."

Sera and Lanaya did not start off on good foot. They both held reservations and prejudices against each other. Sera because of Lanaya's 'elfness' and passion for history, Lanaya because of Sera's seeming disregard for her heritage and the plight elves had at the hands of humans. They quickly discovered they had a lot in common though as well, particularly how they dealt with pressure and problems. Both thought the poltics were rather stupid, content with just simply solving the problem then talking about it . Both wanted to help people, particularly the downtrodden. They both dealt with this mess with humor and sarcasm, Sera was more overt. Their friendship was solidified once Sera discovered Lanaya loved to bake and gave her some cookies. Skyhold was never prepared for the two elves .

Vivienne[]

"I never worry, darling. A leash can be pulled from either end."

Vivenne was arguably the hardest companion Lanaya had understanding and befriend. Both had inherited different core values. Lanaya believed in change and that things could be better, particularly with the circle and the freedom of mages, Vivienne thought differently. Vivienne's insistence that she must play the game and present an untouchable front made her want to rebel further, proudly display her dalish heritage to the horror of nobles. This all friendly but distant disposition changed when Lanaya saw Vivvienne when Duke Bastien de Ghislain got sick. She was sucessful in getting the snowy wyvern heart in time, but even she could tell it was too little to late. Seeing Vivienne real grief though made Lanaya realized she was a real person, and as much as she wore a mask she too felt emotions. Lanaya then started to bend to some of Vivienne's request of mainting a slightly more proper image, even wearing shoes more often around skyhold. In response Vivienne accpeted that Lanaya was proud of heritage and she would only play the game so far. Vivienne has since even joined some of the girl nights, adding facials to their weekly routine of reading smutty novels and laughing about the ridclousness of nobles fashion.

Dorian Pavus[]

"Living a lie... it festers inside you, like poison. You have to fight for what's in your heart."

Lanaya's hesitation against the man for his Tevinter heritage was quickly dissolved during the excursion to the future. They both had trauma that only the other could understand by experiencing it. When Dorian's father requested a meeting, She forewarned about the possible meeting and though the man's previous plans on controling his son disgusted her, she knew the value of family, and that while one need not forget or forgive, it does no good to hold grudges. After this She also found joy in the friendly flirtation between them that were fun but gave a clear friendship. He was a safe harbor to discuss her confusing storm of a romance with Solas. Dorian eventually romance with Iron Bull only furthered their close friendship, helped by the salacious rumors about what a Dalish elf and Tevinter mage could be doing in a secluded part of the library, and occasionally when they were feeling more mischievous, in her room.

The Iron Bull[]

"People don't always tell the truth when you're polite. You've gotta poke them a bit."

All Lanaya thought when she first met the Iron Bull was that he was big. And no, she didn't need Sera to not laugh at such a thought. But she would be lying to say she wasn't a little bit intimidated. He was the first Qunari she had ever met and he was fascinating as he was brutal on the battlefield. He orginally found her intresting partly because of her red hair. Her interest in the Qun and discovery at Iron Bull surprising open nature at both his job as a spy and relaxed attitude with his subordinates was a breath of fresh air from the stuffiness politics and inquisition. She, Bull , Sera and Dorian fell into an easy friendship full of hijinks and mischievous much to the dismay of Josephine. He was a friend but also became a confidant she knew to go to if she wanted a more objective opinion instead of ranting to Dorian or revenge pranks with Sera. When given the chance for abstract Qun intelligence and the charger, she didn't blink. The chargers were worth more than any intelligence and she would not let Iron bull lose his found family for a lack of a term for it. Bull would have regretted it for the rest of his life, whether he would admit it or not.

Cole[]

"This world taught me that changing means losing your friends. But now I know it doesn't have to be true. I have enough self to know what I felt was foolish. Isn't it wonderful?"

Cole drew Lanaya curiosity from the begining. She was never a dreamer before the breach and so she never meet spirits before. After listening to Solas long winded speeches on their friendly and helpful nature they had she was even more curious, and Cole became the subject of that curiosity once he appeared. As she grew to know him, that curiosity turned to affection,as they both had a need to help and soothe others around them. They also enjoyed doing so in quietier ways, and as a result, found they understood each other in an intrinsic way. Lanaya thinks if her mother ever had another child, she would like to imagine he would be like Cole. A gentle and sweet little brother that she could share all her little discoveries and observation. When he came to her with a fear of being bound she agreed to help. Discovering the fate of the human Cole had her furious, but she agreed with Varric. People needed to learn from their own actions, and to make them forget would not help the grow. If Cole wanted to stay in the waking world he needed to be capable of change, and other should be granted the same right. When Solas left he was the only one able to understand her pain, and was by her side for the first two months after Corypheus' defeat.

Leliana[]

"The Chantry has committed many injustices. If we're going to change it, why not change the whole thing?"

The spymaster was hard to grasp. She always held herself at a distance, clearly afraid and hardened by her experience with the divine. Lanaya never was one to give up on saving people, even when they seemed like they didn't want to be saved. Kill them with kindness, she thought, and tried to teach Leliana. Leliana saw Lanaya as blatantly ignorant at the realities of the world but slowly relented, and when approached with the option to kill sister Natalie, she let her go, knowing she would get nothing out of it.

Josphine[]

The two approached each other with polite disposition. Lanaya respected Josphine capabilities with manage the nobles, an activity that made her always feel like pulling her hair or some else hair out . As time went on, Lanaya's growing interest in language, learning orlesian and discovering delicacies of antiva. Josphine's interest in romance novels also often had them and Cassandra together around a fire gossiping and making stories about nobles' possible romantic interests and the newest smutty novels. For the first time Lanaya had a connection with women her age and they were human! Assan'ris would probably not like that and that just made her more happy in rebelling against her brother. When the house of repose set the sights on Josphine , Lanaya was almost in agreement with Leliana, just destroy the contract. It was the easiest solution but she recongize she couldn't solve other peoples problems and if Josphine wanted to elvate the Du Paraquettes she would help her.

Cullen[]

She was charmed by the commander when she first met him. His stumbling blush at odds with his rather imposing posture and skill. Despite being a former templar human she never felt judged and he was a welcome friend that seemed unchanged in the mess of this world and simple, wearing his emotions on his sleeves. When approached and saw what Lyruim addication was doing with him she did not move on her resolve that the substance only harmed him. She was comitted along with her advisors to help Cullen ovecome the addication.
