Austen Malcolm Hawke (born 9:08 Dragon) was a Fereldan refugee who earned the title of Champion of Kirkwall after defeating the Arishok in one-on-one combat during the provoked Qunari invasion of the city. He also unknowingly assisted in the destruction of the city's Chantry, the start of the Mage-Templar war, and Magister Corypheus's escape.
He now serves as an advisor to the current Viscount, Varric Tethras. He is also the full owner of the Bone Pit, where he oversees his workers with a fair and protective hand.
Overview
Physical Appearance
Austen's appearance is near-identical to that of his father, Malcolm; fair skin that blushes near the cheekbones, a strong jawline, large but defined nose, and dark brown, jaw-length hair, save for his blue eyes, which he inherited from his mother, Leandra. He sported a stubble during his first few years in Kirkwall, but access to proper shaving tools saw him remain clean-shaven during the following years as a noble.
He is at an average height for a male human, and has a toned, muscular build.
Personality
Though Austen is a dominantly diplomatic personality type, he never hesitates to crack a joke or put his foot down when the need arises, especially if it regards protecting his loved ones from threatening figures. Depending on the circumstances, he will always try to reason with the enemy before using violence.
Mage-Templar Views
Austen remained very neutral about the mage-templar conflict, especially so during his first few years in Kirkwall, mostly to avoid drawing any unwanted attention to his apostate sister. Even after she was discovered, he tried to stay away from provoking it as much as his position as Champion would allow him to, in part because he believed there were good and bad people on both sides and picking either one never sat right with him. When his hand was forced, he aided the templars for their magic-resisting abilities that would prove handy against the abominations, and spared the lives of those who were willing to surrender peacefully.
Talents and Skills
Austen was trained in sword and shield combat during his childhood in Lothering by his apostate father as a means to protect their family from harm. His skills only progressed as he grew up, enough to be recruited, along with his brother, Carver, by the Grey Wardens to the army in Ostagar, where they fortunately were two of the very few who were able to escape the massacre.
After the murder of his mother, and the growing tensions between the mages and the templars complicating his life even further, Austen undertook the Berserker specialization as a way to vent his inner anger and frustration through combat.

- Austen's name is an amalgamation of his grandfather's name, Aristide, and his great-uncle's name, Fausten.
- He is very sentimental and gets easily attached to weapons and jewelry, and has a large collection of them. He also keeps his belongings from Lothering in a small chest in his bedroom.
- He has a journal that he writes in frequently, which Isabela looks through often.
- He is arachnophobic and claustrophobic.
