Biography[edit | edit source]

History[edit | edit source]

Aethelstan Cousland was born in 9:09 Dragon to Teyrn Bryce and Eleanor Cousland, and was their second son. He was close to his elder brother Fergus and the two often sparred together. He was also closer to his mother than his father, and trained as a knight with the intention of joining King Cailan's army.

In-game[edit | edit source]

In 9:30 Dragon, King Cailan was amassing his forces to fight the darkspawn at Ostagar. Teyrn Bryce Cousland was due to set off for Ostagar, Fergus having already gone, and Aethelstan was to remain behind with his mother to look after Highever. However, Castle Cousland was attacked on the orders of Arl Rendon Howe. Fergus' wife and child were slain, and during the battle Aethelstan and Eleanor discovered Bryce in the kitchen, mortally wounded. Duncan of the Grey Wardens was also present, and gained Aethelstan's promise to join the Grey Wardens. Together they escaped the castle, leaving Bryce and Eleanor behind.

Upon arrival in Ostagar, Aethelstan met with King Cailan and told him of Arl Howe's treachery. The King promised to deal with Howe after the battle. Aethelstan met Alistair, a recent recruit into the Grey Wardens, as well as Daveth and Jory, two would-be wardens. Together they went into the Korcari Wilds to collect darkspawn blood for their Joining, meeting two witches, Morrigan and Flemeth. Aethelstan was the only one who survived the Joining.

He and Alistair were tasked with lighting the beacon at the Tower of Ishal during the battle at the given signal, but reached the beacon too late for the signal. They lit the beacon, but Teyrn Loghain of Gwaren turned his troops away, leaving Duncan, King Cailan and the rest of the army to be slaughtered. The Tower of Ishal was overrun by darkspawn and only Flemeth's timely arrival saved them.

Aethelstan awoke in Flemeth's hut and learned of the fate of the Grey Wardens and King Cailan's army.
